Military: 4 Free Passes to Seaworld

Any active duty, activated or drilling reservist, or National Guardsman is entitled to free admission under the Here's to the Heroes program. He or she need only register, either by clicking here and submitting his or her information or in the entrance plaza of participating parks, and show a Department of Defense photo ID. As many as three direct dependents of military personnel also are entitled to free admission. Dependents may take advantage of the offer without their service member, though an adult must accompany minor dependents.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg, SeaWorld San Antonio and Sesame Place are seasonal operations that will remain closed until spring 2006. Party to Save the Pets - June 11th

You remember all those animals (up to 250,000, at last count) that were left behind when people were evacuated during Hurricane Katrina? They were left behind because FEMA, emergency response teams, and others were specifically forbidden from taking animals - so residents who didn't evacuate themselves were forced to leave their pets. Resulting in, horribly, the pictures we've all seen on the news - pets who hadn't eaten in three weeks or more, and many who died.

If you'd like to see the laws changed so that evacuations include pets, you can help - on June 11th, there's a national rally to save the pets and get the law passed in Congress to have rescue plans for pets too.

Congress is considering a bill that would create better rescue plans for companion animals in disaster.

The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act) is currently being debated in Congress and we must make sure it passes before the next hurricane season. Please RSVP “yes” and make your contribution to the Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF). All funds raised from the Dogathlon will go directly to the HSLF’s work to pass humane legislation including measures to pass the PETS Act.

San Diego Sicilian Festival

Once again, Little Italy is hosting the Sicilian Festival. Though not huge last year, it's four or five blocks of great food and street vendors.

It's about the food, really - but hey, who doesn't love Italian? Parking, while not easy, probably won't be impossible - you'll find parking within a couple of blocks most of the time.

According to organizers, the event starts at the corner of Date and India Streets, and runs from 10am to 6pm. Watch out for rain in the forecast today! And yes, it's a free event.

It's Leopard Shark Time in La Jolla!

I know, the water's still cold - but late May and early June are the best times to see the leopard sharks coming into La Jolla cove to breed. They'll stick around through June and July, but the biggest numbers are early in the summer.

Trust me, it's quite a thrill to swim with dozens of leopard sharks - and while, in July, you'll spend ten minutes between sightings, go now and you'll be swimming in sharks.

And in case you're wondering - no, they're not dangerous. They range from about 3 to 6 feet long, and they've got sharp teeth - but they're bottom feeders, and have never been recorded as attacking humans.

It's put on by Anatomy Spa, the spa at The W in San Diego. They team up with the Minute Bar to give you the best of both worlds: drinks and manicures :).

WHO: Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC)

WHAT: 52nd Annual World Championship Over-The-Line (OTL) Tournament, July 2005. A form of softball, limited to 1,200 teams of three persons each, playing almost 2,400 games in two weekends with 52,000 expected to attend.

WHEN: 2005 Saturday, July 9, Sunday, July 10 & Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17, when quarter finalists take the courts. Play is from 7:30 a.m. to dusk.

WHERE: Fiesta Island on Mission Bay, San Diego, CA.

WHY: OTL serves as the primary fundraising source for OMBAC's year-round charitable programs. OTL is more than "beer, babes and bats on the beach." With worldwide competition, OTL began as a San Diego original, played by men and women from 18 to 80 years-old. It is one of the last pure Southern California traditions left untouched by commercialism.

Parking is a nightmare - get there early, take your rollerblades, etc. They don't allow bikes all over the tournament, so you may not wish to take them.

If five ounces sounds small, consider that many of the ales are between eight and 10 percent alcohol by volume -- about double that of many beers. This new thing, SolitaireSymbol, is either jewelry or clothing that you wear to let people know you're available. And yes, it's politically correct: you can get items that say you're available for the opposite sex, or the same sex. So start looking for those people around you who've opted for SolitaireSymbol, which is only slightly more subtle than "Hey, I'm not getting any!" written on their forehead.

Rock n' Roll Marathon this Sunday!

Each June, more than 20,000 runners, 5,000 volunteers, more than 45 live bands, 2,000 cheerleaders and 180,000 spectators take part in a marathon to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Since 1998, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon has netted over $85 million for this worthy cause.

The annual Rock 'n' Roll Marathon starts on the west side of Balboa Park at Sixth and Laurel, runs through Hillcrest and flanks the zoo. In 2005, the route gets detoured through more of downtown, chugging past Petco Park, through the Gaslamp and around the harbor before winding up at the historic Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Use your race number for free entrance to the post-race concert (with Pinback) at Coors Amphitheatre.
